We couldn’t leave Rio Chagres without a visit to the Fort San Lorenzo at the mouth of the river. This was built in 1598 to protect the entrance to the Rio Chagres, the main route to the Americas, of crucial importance to the Spanish conquistadores. The fort was under almost constant attack by pirates such as Sir Francis Drake, Sir Henry Morgan and the English Admiral Henry Vernon until 1740. It was destroyed twice. We had a pleasant walk up to the Fort and enjoyed the view over the Carribean Sea and the entrance to the Rio Chagres where our boat was anchored for the duration of our visit to the fort. We spotted a monkey on the way back. And a coati who crossed the Rio Chagres swimming just as we were passing! What a sight!
🇩🇪 Fort San Lorenzo
Wir konnten den Rio Chagres nicht verlassen, ohne das Fort San Lorenzo an der Mündung des Flusses zu besuchen. Es wurde 1598 erbaut, um den Eingang zum Rio Chagres zu schützen, der Hauptroute nach Amerika, die für die spanischen Eroberer von entscheidender Bedeutung war. Die Festung war bis 1740 fast ständig Angriffen von Piraten wie Sir Francis Drake, Sir Henry Morgan und dem englischen Admiral Henry Vernon ausgesetzt. Sie wurde zweimal zerstört. Wir machten einen angenehmen Spaziergang hinauf zum Fort und genossen die Aussicht auf die Karibik und die Einfahrt zum Rio Chagres, wo unser Boot für die Dauer unseres Besuchs des Forts vor Anker lag. Auf dem Rückweg entdeckten wir einen Affen. Und einen Nasenbären, der den Rio Chagres schwimmend überquerte, als wir gerade vorbeifuhren! Was für ein Anblick!
